At a debate in the European Parliament last Tuesday, Europeans for Fair Roaming campaign coordinator Bengt Beier presented our demands and the state of our campaign to members of the European Parliament and stakeholders. Other participants included Marek Sowa (Marshal of the Małopolska Region); Vesa Terävä (Head of Unit, DG INFSO); Angelika Niebler MEP; Mr Marcin Cichy (Expert, Office for Electronic Communication Polish Telecommunications Regulator); Monika Stajnarova (Junior Economic Officer, BEUC) and representatives of other consumer groups and telecom operators. After having brought the issue on the table, the priorities for our campaign will now be to make sure users get a fair deal from the new EU roaming regulation. Concretely, together with other organisations, we are currently working on compiling a catalogue of possible improvements to the European Commission proposal on roaming that will be presented soon. The debate showed that there is great support from European Parliament members from all political groups for this.
Roza Thun MEP who supports Europeans for Fair Roaming stated that “we want the commission’s new proposals to be implemented and improved upon in order to ensure a borderless European market for telecommunications.”
TheParliament.com has a report on the debate which you can read here and Roza Thun published an article on roaming at publicserviceeurope.com. Please find more photos of the debate on our Flickr stream.
