[Press Release] EU telecom market / Roaming: Reforms must benefit consumers!

– EU prepares plans for a common European telecom market by 2015 –
In a speech on Thursday, EU Commissioner Neelie Kroes called for a thorough reform of telecom regulations and the creation of a pan-European telecom market. The new reform proposals are expected to be agreed in April 2014 and should make it easier for operators to create European cross-border networks.

The EU already reduced the prices for using mobile phones and tablets abroad over the last years, thanks to the pressure of “Europeans for Fair Roaming”, parliamentarians and other groups. Commissioner Kroes now wants to strike one last time before the upcoming European elections next year and completely re-organise the European telecom market. FairRoaming reaches first goal, gets more support

Last week, the European Parliament’s ITRE committee voted for lowering roaming costs within the EU. This marked a big success and step forward for our campaign. The Parliament’s vote followed a proposal of the European Commission from last July but demands even lower price caps for roaming:

no more than 15 ct/min to make calls and 5 ct/min to receive calls by 2014,
no more than 5 ct for sending SMS,
no more than 50 ct/MB for internet access from 2012,
no more than 20 ct/MB for internet access from 2014,
easier access for alternative operators to offer cheaper roaming services.

Upcoming event: Debate on roaming regulation hosted by Róża Thun MEP

On September 20, Róża Thun MEP, who also supports our campaign, will host a working breakfast and debate with MEPs and Stakeholders on the new EU roaming regulation. The event will take place from 08:15 to 10:00 at the Members’ Salon in the European Parliament in Brussels.

During the discussion the Polish Telecoms Regulator will present its proposal on how to lower roaming cost further by injecting more competition into the European telecommunications market. Further speakers are expected to include Róża Thun MEP and Marek Sowa, Marshal of the Małopolska Region; Vesa Terava, Head of Unit, DG INFSO; Angelika Niebler MEP; Wolfgang Kopf, Senior Executive Vice President, Public & Regulatory Affairs, Deutsche Telekom; and Monika Stajnarova, Junior Economic Officer, BEUC.
